Thermodynamics works just fine.

Thermodynamics works just fine. The thermodynamics that we are taught as third year undergraduates normally assumes a closed system in equilibrium. Everyday life is an open system in nonequilibrium driven by energy from the sun. Equilibrium thermodynamics is a excellent physical model but one needs to understand the model's underlaying assumptions.
