Interesting bit of history about the Pope and the KGB

Supposably the KGB was behind the failed attempt to assassinate the Pope in 1981. The story goes that the KGB subcontracted the task out to a Bulgarian intelligence agency and the East German Stasi. The Bulgarians then hired a Turkish extremist to act as the trigger man. It's difficult to believe the KGB would do something so lame. Was the Pope really such a threat to them? If the KGB wanted the Pope dead then why didn't they blow his plane out of the sky with a missile or a bomb? Hiring a looney-tune with a gun seems pretty stupid to me.
