Check out the Hawking Radiation explained page at ThinkQuest. Very easily explains the basic nuts'n'bolts and calculations in good detail at intro college-calculus level maths. An interesting derivation is the mass of a back-hole emitting visible light frequencies - 10^19 kg or 10,000 trillion tons. Mass of Neptune's Nereid or thereabouts.
Cool if you liked Sheffield's McAndrews stories and the like.
