Space/Science » in reply to New Book on Lunar Prospector & NASA's Disfunctional Culture

I plan on buying his book

Lunar Prospector was a nice project that produced some interesting results. Unfortunately, it was probably NASA Ames' last hurrah as an Ames managed spacecraft (Ames managed the Pioneer spacecraft, the Galileo Probe and others). I was lucky enough to be allowed to do some orbital mechanics work for Lunar Prospector. I did the preliminary calculations of the Lunar Orbit Injection (LOI) burn.

Alan Binder made some comments on his website that I found rather disturbing (the system might(?) be more screwed up than I thought). Refer to the document: lunar-prospector-book.pdf that you can download from:

http://lunar-research-institute.org/lunar_prospector_book.htm

I'm reserving judgement about Binder's comments until after I've read his book and discussed it with colleagues.

Certainly Lunar Prospector was a magnificient achievement that Dr. Binder should be very proud of.
