It's the same line Tumlinson's been feeding to his devotees for several years now, but all dressed up in new clothes, so as to hide its idocy -

"Cancel ISS and shuttle, use the money "saved" to buy a manned Mars mission from the "private sector", and we'll all fly off to Mars - "

completely insane, and the only question is why the insanity was not recognized for such a long time -

You have no idea why mankind is retuning to the Moon, or why we're using the ISS to develop the technologies for that effort. You only see Moon flight as a test bed for Zubrin's Mars Direct components, which view is insane enough in and of itself. There's a big difference in missions.
