I thought the rovers could function without all their wheels?
So can't it be "lifted up" somehow or at least rended so it can't get in the way of the other 5? How many wheels minimum can the rovers go on and still keep moving?
Does JPL/NASA have a plan if the rovers are eventually rendered immobile but still functioning? I hope they can at least make it to Victoria for Opportunity and plant it in a really cool geological location.
What we need next is an old idea: A zepplin probe that can lift off the ground and land at new spots, no wheels required. Now if we can just figure out a way for it to replenish its helium/hydrogen supply.
