Galileo was a genius.
But he was also a rather obnoxious, arrogant person. He was
an intellectual bully.
University professor after university professor, scientist after scientist
for over 3 centuries have perpetrated the MYTH that the Vatican
inquisition and oppression against Galileo was PRIMARILY a battle of RELIGION
versus SCIENCE.
To keep things simple: it ain't so!....Its a nearly 400 year old LIE.
Scientists and University professors have made Galileo out to be a SCIENCE
Martyr because of this myth.
What a load of crock.
Let's set the record straight!...Galileo was oppressed and persecuted by the
Jesuit intellectual hierarchy [in Roman catholicism] because Galileo threatened
their temporal, SECULAR intellectual/academic MONOPOLY.
In other words? Galileo's trial and oppression was primarily POLITICS,
not RELIGION.
Religious arguments made against Galileo by his persecutors were only superficially religious or Christian.
The accusations made against Galileo by his Jesuit enemies were based primarily on the cosmological GEOCENTRIC theories of ARISTOTLE [a pagan Greek philosopher/scientist] and PTOLEMY [another pagan philosopher/scientist].
Is any one of you foolish enough to claim that ARISTOTLE or PTOLEMY
were Christians?...They weren't even noted for religious beliefs; if they
were religious.
It's ironic then that Galileo resorted to the BIBLE to defend his HELIOCENTRIC cosmological theory.
Apparently, Galileo resorted to quoting out of the Epistle of Saint James 1:19, "...the shadow of turning..." noting that the Apostle used the ancient Greek word "Trope" which means ROTATION (turning).
So Galileo was quoting Saint James to say that the Earth's shifting/lengthening/shortening "shadows" are the result of ROTATION of the Earth's axis.
Thus, Galileo was crediting Saint James [half-brother of Jesus] with being
"well ahead of his time" as far as cosmological understanding was concerned.
Naturally, the Jesuits and their Cardinals stifled and ignored Galileo's biblical arguments in favor of the heliocentric theory, because?....Because their
academic/intellectual 'authority' was being questioned.
Today...Let the secular professors, university lecturers and leading scientists
who do not practice suppression or engage in censorship of science heresy and heterodoxy cast the first stone.

It seems appropriate to bring up the topic of Galileo and the Papacy.
