Dear God. That's a damn big payroll.
Does it really take 50 workers making $80,000/year to keep track of a single beeping spacecraft in space?
I think not!
So in other words: Somebody (or several somebodies) is dumping their departmental cost overruns on the Voyager program's Job-Cost sheets...The managers in question are not really upset about the loss of science that will result from the Voyager program's cancellization...No they are really upset because they will lose a nice little cubby-hole in which to dump costs, which will force them to apply those costs against some other pet project(s), thus exposing the scope of those project's true costs...And also exprosing the manager(s) in question's true inefficiencies.
Space/Science » in reply to calling these guys 'short sighted' is an insult to anyone wearing glasses
re: Why does it cost $4 million?
