Hubble rescue mission idea
Found this on Pournelle's site, in a letter:
Why not launch both a shuttle (2 man crew) and a Soyuz (1 man) on a mission to service Hubble. The Soyuz would serve as a lifeboat should something happen to the shuttle, since NASA is so nervous about flying anywhere except the ISS since it can serve as a lifeboat.
Alan Questell
Would this work? Is the Hubble's orbit in range of Soyuz launches?
What if you just carried the Soyuz reentry capsule in the Shuttle cargo bay? (Not sure what the reentry section's life support capacity is.)
