It's a matter of interpretation.
I've seen the STS-80 video and it IS interesting, but not in the way you might think. Looking at thunderstorms from orbit with a night vision camera, all sorts of light producing phenomena become apparent. You just have to step back and try to understand the science of it, not overprint a situational metaphysics. Look up the term "sprites" associated with thunderstorms. I think SciAm did an article on them a while back.
