Current Events » in reply to Congress may force States to strengthen Driver License rules

I'm ambivalent, to say the least, about this.

Conflicting issues:

- The National ID card, given current technology, could very easily get away from us as far as privacy is concerned. Libertarian red flags go up everywhere.

- Yet we don't mind using gas cards, ATM cards, and other things that flag us when we use them. So where are we already? Also, our supposedly "not for ID" Social Security numbers are already pretty much used for ID everywhere.

- Tightening immigration and voting eligibility would be among a number of positive results.

- This bill seems to me to Federalize something that ought to be a state-by-state issue, like voting requirements and methods.

- Yet, there's a real national security factor, that would be a Federal issue.

I've got nothing solid. If I were doing "on the other hands," I'd have to be a millipede. Anybody else?
