I have compassion for RLs plight, not sympathy, but compassion. Don't take his endless mean-spirited or nasty remarks seriously--its really a cry for help.
Maybe, just maybe, someday he'll find someone who can help him become better adjusted. When that happens, It'll make the HZ just a bit more habitable.
If I were religious I'd "pray" for him. As it stands, I know he'll have his own epiphany when he's ready for it.
