Mayor denies he abused boys in 1970s or misused his office

Spokane Mayor Jim West, who championed an anti-gay agenda during his tenure as one of the most powerful Republicans in the Legislature, yesterday admitted to using the trappings of his current office to entice what he thought was a young adult man but denied allegations that he molested two young boys more than 20 years ago.

Frankly, I doubt that the molestation charges are true. But what is curious is that this very conservative lawmaker opposed gay rights legislation in the Washington State legislature, while hiding his sexual preferences. I've actually known (not real well) Jim West for many years and had absolutely no idea he was gay or bi-sexual, but apparently there were rumors floating around. Though I never liked his conservative politics, I always liked him and for all accounts, he was doing an outstanding job as Mayor of this state's second largest city.
