Most robots do something similar to what their's did
Look at a CNC milling machine. It'll rough out a shape with a large tool, then swap in a smaller tool and do edge work, all automatically. Some will also pick up extension bits, and many robot arms in industry are multi-axis, fully articulated, with several elbow joints.
