This is the problem with Moffett Field. The Navy operated there for decades and caused some toxic waste problems. Many of the buildings date back to the 1930s with the corresponding lead and abestos issues. The toxic building problem was compounded by a nearby semiconducter chip fab facility that allowed highly toxic chemicals to get into the ground water (this happened decades ago). Moffett Field was so badly polluted that it was declared a "Superfund Site". NASA Ames was given Moffet Field after the Navy left (sort of like being given a spent nuclear fuel rod).
