Steep Rise in Terrorist Attacks Worldwide
Or so says the new National Counterterrorism Center with over 650 significant strikes this year alone.
State Department officials say the growing threat today is from "global jihadists", inspired (but not directed) by Bin Laden. These groups affiliated with Al Qaeda or indoctrinated with their ideology are now carrying out most of the terrorist attacks against the US and allied interests.
At the same time, Iraq has become what Afganistan was to a previous generation of terrrorists,
"a melting pot for jihadists from around the world, a training ground and an indoctrination center".
Another unforseen result of the war's messy aftermath.
