I thought the reason that the Russian/Soviet cosmonauts carried/carry
handguns with them into space is that if they should return and land way off course,
like Voskhod 2 did, the cosmonauts would have a handgun available to defend themselves
against nearby wolves, bears, or other carnivores in the taiga?
That's what I learned from the grapevine. Correct me if I'm wrong.
