MER-B is "swimming" in Mars dust

If the Meridiani plain is mostly deep Mars dust then MER-B's controllers need to chose their path carefully. A wiser course maybe to backtrack to firmer ground and then try to circle around the worst of the Mars dust. I wonder if the regions of deeper Mars dust can be detected from orbit?
