re: US Stands in Way of Space Treaty - Helen Caldicott

"The Bush administration is clearly moving toward putting weapons in outer space. It has spent about $500 million a year in research on those potential weapons in the past few years, according to the Center for Defense Information, although often burying it in categories that make hard accounting extremely difficult."

Only if you count anti-missile systems -- totally ground and sea-based -- as 'space weapons' -- but then DON'T count Russian anti-missile systems as 'space weapons'. What a moroness.

"There are powerful reasons why such weapons should be forbidden.
First, placing weapons in space inevitably would provoke an arms race there."

Funny, when the Soviets placed weapons in orbit, Caldicott and her ilk ignored them, lied about them, made excuses for them -- but the Soviet space weapons never provoked the US to build comparable orbital weapons. Never. Could be because Caldicott's living on some entirely different planet than the rest of us, here in the real world.

"Finally, a response to any possible arms race in outer space is already available: a draft international treaty forbidding space weaponization that was proposed by Russia and China in 2002."

That's right, wrap our spacecraft not in armor but in protective paper certified by the very countries which most dislike the current asymmetry in space-based military support capabilities -- they are just SO eager to promise to let us keep that advantage. How generous of them.
