Hypocrisy is a bi-partisan malady:

Spokane mayor faces new allegations Resolution to city charter could allow council to recall Jim West JOHN K. WILEY; The Associated Press Last updated: May 25th, 2005 08:28 AM SPOKANE – Pressure for Mayor Jim West to resign grew Tuesday after a newspaper published fresh allegations of past inappropriate behavior. The Spokesman-Review published allegations Tuesday that West had made an inappropriate comment to state Sen. Pam Roach about her teenage son and that a former Spokane man claimed West fondled him during a drug arrest back when West was a sheriff’s deputy. West can only be removed from office by a recall vote. He said Monday he expects to be exonerated and to serve out the remaining 21/2 years of his term. But City Councilman Al French drafted a resolution to change the city charter to allow the council to sanction or remove the mayor from office. West, 55, is the subject of two investigations into allegations that he misused his office by offering jobs to men he met in a gay chat room. Roach told the newspaper West made the comment in the Senate chamber in about 1990, when her then-18-year-old son was working as a tour guide in the Capitol. At the time, West was a senator. “West told me, ‘I want to do to your son what no mother would want to know.’” Roach said she told fellow Republican Sen. Ann Anderson about the encounter at the time, but Anderson, now a lobbyist, recalled the incident differently. Anderson, a friend of West, told the newspaper Roach relayed the following comment from him: “Pam, you have a nice-looking young son.” Roach said she later told her son, Dan Roach, now a Republican state representative from Bonney Lake. The newspaper also reported claims of a former Spokane man who said West fondled him in 1977 when the mayor was a sheriff’s deputy. Jeffrey A. Mewes, 45, said he was 17 when West shoved his hand down the front of the teenager’s pants, ostensibly looking for marijuana. “He put his hand way down inside the front of my pants, like a fondling search,” Mewes said. Through his private attorney, Bill Etter, West denied the reports.
Mr. West is a conservative Republican and former legislative leader who repeatedly opposed legislation aimed at protecting the rights of gays and lesbians.
