Navi, Dnoces, Regor: the Apollo Stars

When humans first took to Earth's oceans, they used the stars to guide
them. Stars were also for navigation when humans ventured out into space.
Certain stars were used for tracking to tell whether or not the spacecraft
was on course. During the Apollo missions, three dozen stars were used.
Some of these guide stars where known by the ancients, Vega, Canopus and
Sirius. There were also some odd names on the star list that few
astronomers at the time had ever heard of – names like Navi, Dnoces, and
Regor.

These strange stellar names, not to be found in early star maps of the
twentieth centurey, were created by astronauts Virgil Grissom, Ed White
the second, and Roger Chaffee -- the crew of Apollo 1, that had been
scheduled for launch in 1967.
