WorldShip syndrome

Hi LJK

I don't have anymore on the Project, but what I read of it makes it seem rather tame as an interstellar vehicle concept. I've never really believed in WorldShip concepts and while this one seems a fairly representative example of the group it doesn't answer the utter implausibility of the main assumption that people will be content to travel so slow and to debark when their descendents arrive at an uncertain destination. It think they'd rather be nomads and cruise the Galaxy, albeit at higher speeds. That I could believe, with people mining cometoids for lithium - which is a fusion fuel and structural metal. A million person coloniser seems sort of silly in light of inevitable improvements in cloning, android/soma making and genetic synthesis/screening.

Come to think of it the only people content to cruise at 0.002c will be those that can turn off consciousness for millennia at a time - namely, uploads. And since they can probably do without all that messy life-support en route they'd be able to launch off in "tiny" starships squirted out of the solar system at 1000 gees on a particle beam.
