Flying whales.

Extraterrestrial (link posted earlier by LJK)

You'd expect a program by NG to present well thought out possibilities when it comes to other-world life forms and maybe it did but I have a few problems with the flying whales. (Actually, they had gills supposedly for filter feeding which makes them at least part fish.)

1) The whales must be in constant flight- no legs for landing or take off. Only live birth would be possible and the problem I see is no where on Earth does a creature learn to fly the moment it's born. Even insect pupa get a chance to dry out their wings and pump them up safely on the ground.

The only way around this is for the mother to give birth at the highest possible altitude and teach the 'calf' to fly during free fall and catch it on her back for a repeat lesson if the youngster didn't get it the first time. It's details like this I'd like spelled out for me, not left to my imagination.

2)Doesn't a wingspan of 32' seem just a little short even with the heavy atmosphere?

3)Another thing, they could have carried the theme of 'life in the sky' a bit further. Did life evolve in this "ocean above", apart from that on the surface?
