Some people, including Arthur C. Clarke, were interpreting images like this one as vegetation on Mars. The problem was, like the Mars Face, that trying to analyze these things from orbit isn't good enough and just leads to wishful thinking.
Remember the canals? Once again, a combined problem of distance and wishful thinking regarding life on the Red Planet.
