Having visited the summit of Mauno Kea and having personally toured the observatories there (my older brother was able to arrange a special visit for us for both Keck and Subaru), I can understand your frustration. But I also understand the environmental and cultural issues associated with placing large structures on mountain tops. These are fragile environments. And indigenous peoples often have deep religious ties to these places.
In this day and age of international cooperation in astronomical research, I'm not sure it matters where TMT is built. But I do hope whatever choice is made, appropriate regard for the environment and cultural sensistivities is made.
