re: I think it was "Gophs"

The "updates" started okay and did start making some interesting delves into the motives behind 1A's desire to liberate humans from machine dependence and domination and even took a look at the subjects before Magnus who 1A (must - not - write - A1!) tried to turn into steel-smashing heroes of North Am, but failed and they went crazy. 1A ended up storing them on Phobos, I believe, but they escaped, of course.

But the series ended up becoming as angsty as the other "modern" comics and even tried to merge story lines with other series, which is when I quit.

That's one of the things I liked so much about Magnus: He was a straight-arrow hero who knew what he had to do and didn't spend a lot of time sitting around agonizing about it. I remember he once said to a villain, when told to bow by his minion robots: "I bow to no man or machine, whoever you might be."

Plus no one could match Russ Manning's incredible artwork, and Lord, could that guy draw women. But as a kid, of course I thought it was the robots that were so cool, plus the giant city.
