I didn't make this up:

July 05, 2005 // Malaysia: “Deep Impact” is a new weapon

Kuala Lumpur Utusan, a Malaysian government-controlled daily newspaper

Without us being aware, most of the sophisticated weapon and reconnaissance systems developed by the United States have been influenced by Hollywood's imagination.
As an example, the Stealth reconnaissance system, Awacs and Blackhawk fighter aircraft are a result of the imagination of Hollywood war and fiction screenwriters for many decades.
Even the development of very sophisticated weapons displayed through movies such as Star Wars have been examined since that movie premiered in 1977.
Although difficult to develop, it has never been considered to be something that is impossible.
With the sophisticated science and information technology that the US possesses, weapons that are dreamed about can be developed -- although it will take years.
For example, this can be seen in light and heavy weapons that have evolved themselves. Weapons like “Star Wars”, for example. The US since the administration of President Ronald Reagan has seen it as something that is not impossible to do.
The Strategic Defense Initiative shows a guided missile defense system through the use of lasers and satellites.
Because it demands quite high funding, research on it has been rejected by Congress.
Although it is clear, research on the concept of defense or something similar is never actually curtailed.
The US has never rested from developing its armaments.
In the last few days the world is suddenly exposed with one more space mission that if seen simply it can be linked with a Star Wars-esque defense concept.
It revolves around one space experiment involving the 'Deep Impact' vehicle (also the title of a Hollywood film) that conducted a research mission on the constituents of a comet.
The vehicle reportedly released an 'impact' instrument in the direction of the 'Tempel 1' comet.
When part of the comet shattered, Deep Impact, which has a guidance system and an automatic camera, then took images of collision and cloud of dust, ice and fragments that originated from the impact.
Deep Impact actually is a secret US mission to develop a defense system from space, sparked by their desire for Star Wars.
It is this future sophisticated US defense system that will allow attacks and self defense at any time.
This phenomenon is the same as their sophistication to create sophisticated bio weapons that are capable of killing without leaving any trace.
So it is with the US, for thousands of years to come, and at the same time they want to perpetually control and be the world's policeman.
