While I agree with you and know what you are saying, a few missions exploring the region just beyond our Sol system is prudent in my view. Look at what we are finding with the two Voyager probes that we did not know about before. And not too long ago, we were surprised to learn just how far the solar wind extended.
There may be things in the realm between the stars that could hamper or end an interstellar mission before it even gets to Alpha Centauri. I'd rather have a few scouts find this out the hard way than lose a mission to another star system.
