"Save Target As.."
I have the same problem. Directly linking to a pdf can often lock things up, despite up to date Acrobat. Especially those big files on my weak little dial-up. So I right click on the link and click on "save target as". I'll do this for big files of other types as well.
But since you've solved the problem with a liberal application of Firefox.....never mind.
