re: Spirit nears the summit! (big files)

"As it is, Buck is perfectrly entitled to do what he is doing"

I know. There's a whole lot of things people are entitled to do - but they're still not right. Farting out loud next to someone on a train is something you're entitled to do....but would you ;)

"if you ever hope to put a book together, even your own images could end up being pirated beforehand."

Believe me - my best work is nowhere near my forum :)

"I would also suggest you put a Pay pal dontaion box on each page,"

There is one paypal donate button (hidden away a bit) which actually - has brought in what I considered to be an astonishing sum in only a few months ( enough to cover hosting and software lic. fees for several years ). Amazingly, the place doesnt need more cash :) The excess is tucked away earning interest, and is there in case larger hosting is required - but to date, we're using only a fraction of the available capacity. It's not really the bandwidth that bothers me w.r.t. image lifting - it's removal from context which eliminates explanation and credit. The option is there to simply turn off the visibility of images to non members, but thats not something I want to do....yet.

" I sure would like to see each set of images broken out by probe."

They are. Spirit images are in the Spirit forum, images from a particular Cassini rev are in that specific rev forum, Deep Impact images are in a thread about Deep Impact etc etc etc. There's also a powerfull search tool as well. I've never been in a situation of thinking "hmm - where's that image of that thing that guy did..." and not been able to find it inside of 30 seconds.

BUT

I agree - the historical work, mainly by Ted and Phil is arguably the most remarkable of the lot - but it's THEIR work, not mine - and it would be out of place and rude to catalogue it. I've had talks with a few people about a 'Privateers Photojournal' and some options are being looked at - it could be mighty usefull. There's so many people doing such good work now courtesy of the 'net that a central repository of it is becoming overdue. There are lots of photo management type packages in the Sourceforge, and I'm trying a few out privately to see if one will fit the sort of thing a project like this would need.

We might not agree on much EP, but we share some ideas in this field, trust me :)

The capactiy of the privateer to generate amazing imagery was demonstrated when someone at my forum posted a quite ASTONISHINGLY beautiful sunset image from Spirit about a week before it was ever seen on the JPL website - at which point the media and other sites picked up on it :)
