In addition to gravitational effects, magnetic effects may be involved.

During the early phase of stellar collapse, VERY strong magnetic fields may be produced by contraction of the pro-stellar spheres. Such magnetic fields, if not aligned with the axis of revolution of a given planet (which itself could have a strong field), could produce large torque as well. Just a speculation, but not an absurd one.
