Birds

I believe a horn is sounded before a launch to scare away birds. The noise that comes from the SRBs and SSMEs is lethal. Any birds near the Shuttle shortly after launch are probably killed or permanently deafened

p.s. I watched the first launch of Columbia near the VAB. The noise from Columbia made my clothes shake.
