I have a feeling that the first true explorers of the galaxy will not be us, but our AI descendents. They will be far more capable in handling the Cosmos.

I would think, more likely our genetically-modified descendants, maybe with cyber enhancements

There must be heaps of good sci-fi about on that topic .. of which I'm completely ignorant .. others here will surely know of some good books.
