Zond 5 flew by the Moon on 18 September 1968. Apollo 8 did not carry people to the Moon until 24 December 1968. The humble tortoise beat humans to the Moon by 3 months. Some Russian with a sense of humor was probably thinking of the "Tortoise and the Hare" when he selected Zond 5's payload.
