the first paragraph (re disruption of laminar flow) is a rewording of what I wrote in my own post (and what gary described previously). However, the Wayne Hale quote went some way to answering my query .. thanks for helping out.
I'd still appreciate some further detail on this .. maybe being mid-week, the pros are too busy ..
