I did not intend or mean that a scientist should just be let aboard for free just because he or she is a scientist. I would be happy at this point to know that some scientific instruments for measuring cislunar space and analyzing Luna itself (or maybe some in-space astronomy) are on the craft that could be activated by a switch or from the ground.
Though you do make a good point about fund-raising. I would think that any good university that spend millions on sports might be proud to say that one of their faculty was on the first manned return flight to Luna in decades.
