Most physcists are familliar with the concept of the GOD of miracles vs. the God of order, a concept that Einstein spoke about. Given the elegance and order one who studies physics and math can percieve in physical law, the second is probably the one referred to by physicists. I doubt most believe in a literal hell or armageddon or other such early attempts at sci-fi.
Can belief in god fill in a few blanks? Sure. If it's too hard to comprehend, if ambiguity overwhelms and understanding and insight seem to be over the event horizon of the lowly individual human, then do what has been done since the begining of time. Push it to the domain of the supernatural, in this case god.
It's not science at that point though. Rather it's a conscession of human limitations and faith (and HOPE) that there is the almighty watching out for you to explain it all to you when you wake up from the world.

Which god is that?
