re: New arctic oasis found.

As one might expect, it's on a plate boundary: the continuation of the Mid-Atlantic ridge northeast of Iceland.

On this USGS map, centered at 70N lat/0 long, Jan Mayen island is the little squib of green to the left of center. Iceland is to the southwest, mainland Norway to the southeast. The oceanic ridge is easily seen, tailing off to the ENE.

And if that weren't already enough evidence of active geology... the northeastern end of Jan Mayen is a volcano, the Beerenberg. What I was guessing (from the USGS map, and the slightly better resolution on Google Earth) to be a transverse fracture, immediately northeast of the island, turns out to be one.
