They're called whiteboards instead of blackboards because that's what they are now.
White plastic (or whatever) boards that people write on with wipe-off pen. Blackboards, which had to be dark because chalk is white, were originally made of slate, but most of the ones of my youth were probably just special black or dark green paint on a board or something.
