bouncing ball

a 'bouncing ball' probe would need some hefty AI so as not to waste itself on some pseudorandom mission (ie getting lost in the ice maze) - that's an example where AI really WOULD be indispensable. Such a mission could never be ground-controlled. As with your ideas generally, this is far-future speculation IMHO (though interesting)
