It'll no doubt get better mileage in town than the stock Highlander. For those people who only use their SUVs to drive around town, it sounds like a good idea. However, many people use SUVs to do things like tow trailers and take road trips. I'm not sure if a hybrid works very well for either of those uses. Current hybrid designs reportedly have limited performance on the road because they don't get the benefit of regenerative braking. I suspect they don't have the ability to tow things for long distances, either.
Me, I drive an SUV wanna-be (Honda CRV). It gets 28 MPG in town and up to the mid 30s on the road, and that's with air conditioning and an automatic transmission. It gets almost exactly the same mileage as my first car, a 1974 Honda Civic (no air, stick shift), a vehicle that was much smaller. Sure, the CRV is a gutless wonder, but it does well in bad weather and that's an important consideration here in Colorado.
