Wouldn't the average metallicity of the entire universe increase with time?
At some point carbon-based chemistry would be more rare, right? So life would disappear long before the stars petered out. And how would the mass distribution of the universe be affected by the proliferation of denser nuclei, like thallium, lead or bismuth? Would new stars form from these materials, or would the universe be dominated by dark inert matter?
