re: Screens and real estate

All you get from newspapers can be had on the internet.

Here's how I get the news in the morning.

First, I check Drudge. Yeah, I know, but if something big has happened, it will be there. However, it's critical that you don't let that be your last stop. Drudge's accuracy is good, but not great, and he does pick and choose his links according to his own bias. You need to glean the headlines and go on from there.

From there you can move on to conventional news sites (Yahoo News and such) for details. If you know the Web, you can easily get details from sources "closer to the bone," and with more analysis, than the conventional media. I'm sure all of us here know better places to find out what's happening with the Mars Rovers than the mainstream media. Same is true for almost everything. Go directly to NOAA for hurricane news. Go to military sites and information from those on-scene for war news. Fresh news still takes some time to be amenable to Google search, but stories a few hours old show up all over the place.

The key here is to collect data from many sources, and integrate it yourself. If the story is a hot one, you'll notice contracting information, and the beginnings of arguments over facts and analysis. Take it in, from both sides. The truth will begin to select itself out, even if it doesn't become obvious to you when listening to the discussion.
