There may be evolutionary developments that are more inherently advantageous than brain-power
Like I said, all living things on Earth are just as evolved as we, they just look different, and occupy different niches in the ecosystem. A slight change in environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, food scarcity, etc) could give another animal the advantage. They'd be right at home, regardless of intelligence, while we struggle using every brain cell we have to survive.
