There are still lots of folks misplaced by Katrina flooding into Houston. I run into them everywhere on my side of town. My wife saw one lady, with Louisiana plates, parked on the side of the road and sobbing. She wanted to help but didn’t know what to do. The lady just shook her head. There were a dozen or so just wondering aimlessly down the aisles of Wal-Mart.
The Astrodome is full, so other Texas towns are taking people in. Local residents are even taking them in to their homes. We are helping as best we can, but there are so many. We can feed and shelter them, but we are concerned of what lies ahead. It could be months before they can get back an rebuild their homes. But what will they do in the meantime?
Some local businesses are offering jobs, but that won’t be enough. That will only help a few. After a couple of weeks, these people are going to get restless.
Perhaps the government can recruit some of the younger stronger folks to help with the cleanup and rebuilding of New Orleans. These people could be a part of bringing their town back to life. And they could earn a living while doing it.
