Can't have one and not the other. Meanwhile, I checked the definitions of Kardashev civilizations and I don't really think that unlimited growth is possible in the ways that they state. For example, I don't think it is possible to harness all of the Earth's energy, the Sun's energy, or to achieve interstellar travel and harness all of the galaxy's energy. What we've got we're stuck with. That would seem to imply futility, but not necessarily.
It is possible that future progress will come only through genetic advances. Generations of enhancements, and new technologies to supplement. Our descendents might look like walking cuttle fish, but they'll use a whole new kind of technogadgetry that we never thought of. Maybe alot of things we consider essential will be disused because they don't need them anymore. If they can see in the dark, who needs artificial lights? If they have fur, who needs a furnace? If they have giant ears, who needs air conditioning? If they have photosynthetic skin, who needs food? Scratch one big energy consumer after another.
You see?

Kinda reminds me of Bush's statements about growth and foreign oil imports
