Throwaways

Like sand and snow sculptures, these wonderful works are all the more fascinating because with the next rain they will be gone. So to experience one of them in person is a truly unique event.

We have a similar, less professional deal going in our Youth Services Dept. A large whiteboard takes up one side of a wall that divides the internet computers from the game computers. (The other side is all self-healing bulletin board.) Twice a month, an art student from the high school comes in to illustrate upcoming holidays and other events on the whiteboard. They can take photographs of their work for their portfolios, but every couple weeks, it goes away never to return.

Nothing like seeing art wiped out by rain to make a person appreciate how ephemeral human works are.
