robotic probes vs people
We can already conceive of downloading minds into hardware. What would prevent such a download into robotic probes. These minds could either dream, exist in virtual reality, or just sleep. while they waited for the long interstellar transit times to complete. Just a thought. It really all gets down to information and how compactly you can store it. With nano machines theoretically you could probably bootstrap an entire civilization with a relatively compact probe.
