People hit by disaster are exhausted and hungry and dirty and bereft of their belongings. Some of them can't find members of their family, or have lost them to death. Some of them are sick or injured. Some of them are angry, for reasons that ought to be understandable. Some of them are depressed or showing other symptoms of extreme stress. The last thing they should need to do is to demonstrate their gratitude sufficiently to impress you or anyone else in order to obtain what they need to live. That's not what we're here for.
