Mechanics Illustrated or some such magazine had a running series of article years ago on their mechanic "Smokey" trying to develop a high-temperature radiatively-cooled engine. Don't know if it ever got anywhere. This was before ceramics, and I know people are working on ceramic engine parts for similar reasons.
